Venice pioneered the techniques for bonding wafer-thin metal leaf to clear glass in the 1300's. By the time of the Renaissance, Venice had established an outstanding reputation as the world center of mirror production. The Venetians are also credited with the development of the frame, first used to protect the mirrored glass during transport. Venice protected its monopoly on the techniques of mirror making (and optics) by inflicting the death penalty on any glassmakers caught leaving the city without permission. Today the ancient traditional techniques of Venetian mirror construction still lives, passed down by glassmaking masters from generation to generation through a time-honored system of apprenticeship. | |
